By the end of the 19th century there were only a dozen Asiatic lions left in India. And all these were left in the forest of Gir. Later, the number of lions started disappearing not only from India but also from elsewhere in Asia. Then the Nawab of Junagadh announced to reserve the Gir area for the lions and also stopped the hunting of the lions.

You might be shocked to learn that there were just 14 lions left in Gujarat after 1990. After the hunting expedition, the number of lions there was only 20, after which his son Nawab Muhammad Mahabat Khan helped a lot in the protection of the lions.
