History of Jim Corbett
The history of Jim Corbett National Park dates back to the colonial era in India. And here’s a timeline of important events and events in the park’s history. In 1858, the British created the Nainital district. in which that area was included. Which later became a national park.
19th century The area that you now know as Jim Corbett National Park was initially a part of the Terai forest. Which served as a hunting ground for the British colonial rulers. This park was known for its rich wildlife. But used to attract hunters from all over the world.
1936: Jim Corbett National Park was established as Hailey National Park on 8 August 1936. The park was named after Governor Sir Malcolm Hailey to honor and respect wildlife conservation.
Then the name of the park was changed to Jim Corbett National Park in honor of Jim Corbett. Who played an important role in the establishment of the park and the conservation of its wildlife. Jim Corbett tried to keep an eye on the man-eating tigers and leopards, deer, bears and avoid falling prey to them.
It became the first Jim Corbett National Park in India to come under Project Tiger, a tiger conservation initiative launched by the Government of India. The park was included in Project Tiger to protect the dwindling population of Bengal tigers and their habitat.
Jim Corbett National Park was declared a Tiger Reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Which provides endangered tiger species and its protection.
1991: Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and parts of reserve forest along its northern boundary were added to this park. Thereby increasing the total area under protection.
